DR. DAVID LIVINGSTONE
MISSIONARY, EXPLORER, SOCIAL CRUSADER

"Dr Livingstone , I presume?" How many times have you had that one thrown at you? Those of us who carry the surname get the quip every time we flash our driver's license or passport. A lot of this name recognition and association with the famous quote probably has to do with the 1938 movie, "Stanley & Livingstone". I never was able to see the movie until I finally got satellite TV and "Turner Classics". It was an adventure film that greatly romanticized the pursuit of Dr. Livingstone in deepest Africa by Henry Morton Stanley, an American newspaper reporter. Since then, there have been several good documentaries and a pathetic TV version of the story about Dr. Livingstone's accomplishments and pitfalls in his attempts to Christianize the remote parts of Africa and to explore the deep recesses of the continent. Some of the documentaries have dealt with the darker side of David Livingstone - his neglect of his wife and children and the fact that his explorations and missionary work led to the European colonization and destruction of native African cultures.
